Padres Retain Ace Dylan Cease Despite Deadline Trade Efforts
3 Aug
Summary
- Padres tried to trade Cease before deadline, but failed to find suitable deal
- Offered Cease in package for Red Sox's Jarren Duran, but deal rejected
- Acquired pitchers JP Sears, Nestor Cortes to bolster rotation and bullpen

As of August 3rd, 2025, the San Diego Padres were actively trying to trade their starting pitcher Dylan Cease leading up to the trade deadline. However, similar to their failed attempts to find a new home for Cease during the offseason, the Padres ultimately kept the right-hander in San Diego.
The Padres were only willing to trade Cease if they could acquire major league talent that could immediately help the team this season. They had been heavily pursuing Boston Red Sox left fielder Jarren Duran and sent an offer that included Cease in exchange for the All-Star, but the deal was quickly rejected by the Red Sox.
Despite failing to land Duran, the Padres continued to shop Cease to other teams. They reportedly offered him to the Houston Astros in exchange for starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti and three unnamed prospects, but the Astros also turned down the trade.
In the end, the Padres were unable to find a deal worthy enough to part ways with their talented right-hander. Rather than trading away a starting pitcher, San Diego instead bolstered their pitching staff by acquiring left-handed starters JP Sears from the Athletics and Nestor Cortes from the Brewers at the deadline.
The Padres also landed a new catcher, Freddy Fermin, from the Kansas City Royals and outfielder Ramón Laureano from the Baltimore Orioles in separate deadline deals.
