Senators Dodge Draft Pick Forfeit

Summary
- Senators avoid forfeiting a first-round draft pick.
- Team fined 1 million Canadian dollars to NHL Foundation.
- Trade involved Evgenii Dadonov's no-trade clause.

The National Hockey League has decided against making the Ottawa Senators forfeit a first-round draft pick due to their involvement in a trade that was later nullified. This decision comes after a change in team ownership.
The Senators will now receive the 32nd and final pick in the first round of the draft. Additionally, the team has been fined 1 million Canadian dollars, which will be directed to NHL Foundation Canada. A stipulation remains that if Ottawa misses the playoffs and wins the draft lottery for one of the top two picks, a re-draw will occur.
This adjusted penalty follows an initial ruling on November 1, 2023, which would have required the Senators to forfeit a pick in either 2024, 2025, or 2026. The original trade, made in July 2021, involved trading forward Evgenii Dadonov to Vegas. The Senators failed to provide Vegas with Dadonov's 10-team no-trade list, which ultimately led to the NHL Central Registry nixing a subsequent trade attempt in March 2022.
