Open Golf Shifts to August 2028 for LA Olympics

In a significant adjustment to the global golf calendar, The Open championship will be rescheduled to August in 2028. This change is a direct response to the upcoming Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which will feature golf competitions from July 19-29 of that year. The R&A has proactively moved its major championships to ensure players do not face a scheduling dilemma between Olympic participation and competing in golf's prestigious final major of the year.

The R&A's decision will see The Open held from August 3-6, 2028, followed by the ISPS Handa Senior Open and concluding with the AIG Women's Open from August 17-20. This proactive scheduling aims to provide clarity and facilitate planning for all stakeholders involved in the international golf circuit. The R&A expressed appreciation for the collaborative discussions that led to this agreement.

This marks a notable shift, as men's and women's golf individual tournaments returned to the Olympics in 2016. The LA 2028 Games will also introduce a mixed-team event. While The Open's dates will revert to mid-July in 2029, the 2028 adjustment ensures a harmonious integration of major golf events with the Olympic spectacle.
