Softball's Olympic Return: LA Snubbed for Oklahoma City
11 Mar
Summary
- Softball returns to Olympics but will be in Oklahoma City, not LA.
- Decision driven by using existing venues and avoiding new stadiums.
- Former star Natasha Watley expresses sadness over the location choice.

The return of softball to the 2028 Summer Olympics, scheduled for Los Angeles, will not feature the tournament within the host city. Organizers confirmed the competition will instead take place in Oklahoma City, a decision attributed to the desire to use existing venues.
This move, nearly 1,300 miles from Los Angeles, means the Olympic softball event will be staged at Devon Park in Oklahoma City. This venue is renowned for hosting the Women's College World Series and is considered a premier softball stadium.
Despite the sport's comeback, former U.S. Olympic medalist Natasha Watley voiced her disappointment. Growing up in Los Angeles, she felt saddened by the decision, believing Southern California's vibrant softball scene was a missed opportunity for Olympic celebration.
Cost and infrastructure were key factors in relocating the tournament. Hosting in Southern California would have necessitated converting a baseball stadium. Watley also noted that competing far from the main Olympic hub might diminish the athletes' overall experience and access to other sporting events.
Nevertheless, Watley underscored the immense importance of softball's Olympic inclusion for its long-term growth and future.
