The Milan Cortina Winter Olympics have been marred by reports of athletes' medals breaking shortly after they were awarded. Gold medalist Breezy Johnson shared that her medal broke while she was celebrating, and biathlete Justus Strelow's mixed relay bronze medal detached from its ribbon during a team dance.

U.S. figure skater Alysa Liu also posted a social media clip showing her team event gold medal separated from its ribbon. These incidents have prompted an investigation by the Milan Cortina organizing committee.

Andrea Francisi, chief games operations officer, stated that the committee is paying "maximum attention" to the matter, recognizing the medal as the ultimate dream for athletes and ensuring its perfection is paramount.

This is not the first time Olympic medals have faced quality concerns; following the Paris Summer Olympics, some medals required replacement due to tarnishing or corrosion.
