Oilers' Overhaul Continues: Could Kane Return for Grit?

The Edmonton Oilers have initiated a significant organizational overhaul this offseason, making substantial changes to their coaching staff and roster. New coaches Mike Babcock and D.J. Smith have been brought in, replacing Kris Knoblauch and Mark Stuart. General manager Stan Bowman has also been active, trading Darnell Nurse and acquiring goaltenders Devon Levi and Frederik Andersen.

Despite these extensive moves, one crucial element for a deep playoff run may still be absent, according to Oilers insider David Staples. Staples argues that the team lacks the necessary physical presence and intimidation factor that can shift the momentum in playoff hockey.

He previously considered pursuing Nikita Zadorov for this role, describing him as an "apex predator." Staples now suggests that free agent Evander Kane could offer a similar impact. Kane, who played for Edmonton from 2022 before being traded to Vancouver last offseason, has a history of strong playoff performances.

Kane had previously indicated his preference to stay with the Oilers, citing fond memories but acknowledging the business aspects of the NHL, particularly salary cap constraints. His career statistics, including over 1,000 games played and significant playoff scoring, demonstrate the experience he could bring to a contending team.
