Notre Dame's Defensive Struggles Persist Ahead of Crucial Arkansas Clash

As of September 27th, 2025, Notre Dame's defense has been a major source of concern for the team. Under first-year defensive coordinator Chris Ash, the Irish rank next-to-last among Power 5 teams in scoring defense and have allowed the second-most points to start a season in school history.

Head coach Marcus Freeman is standing by Ash, however, calling on his players to "fight" through the issues rather than "flight" and blame others. Freeman held an intentionally uncomfortable meeting with his defensive coaching staff this week, insisting they already know what needs to be fixed, from poor coverage techniques to a lack of pass rush.

The Irish will face a major test this weekend when they travel to Arkansas to take on the Razorbacks. Arkansas' offense, led by dynamic quarterback Taylen Green, ranks in the top 10 nationally in yards per game and yards per play. Freeman acknowledged the challenge of containing Green, who has been a dual-threat nightmare for opponents so far this season.

Without star cornerback Leonard Moore, who is listed as questionable with an ankle injury, Notre Dame's secondary has struggled. The Irish may need to win a shootout to leave Fayetteville with a victory and keep their College Football Playoff aspirations alive.
