Summary
- Cardinals aim for first-ever back-to-back national titles.
- Team overcame significant roster changes to reach championship.
- Season honors longtime coach Jeff Thorne's legacy.
The North Central College football team has reached the Division III National Championship game for the sixth consecutive year. This season, the Cardinals are pursuing a program first: winning back-to-back national titles, a goal driven by their slogan 'move the needle.' Overcoming the departure of key players, including their former star quarterback, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience.
Led by quarterback Garrett Wilson and an exceptional offense featuring Thomas Skokna, who secured 23 receiving touchdowns, the Cardinals' performance has been outstanding. Coach Brad Spencer highlighted the offensive line's impressive adaptation, with eight new starters successfully leading Division III in scoring.
This championship run carries profound emotional weight due to the recent passing of longtime coach Jeff Thorne after a battle with cancer. Thorne, instrumental in North Central's first national title, had inspired the team earlier this season. Now, Coach Spencer aims to secure the program's first repeat championship in his honor.
