Norris Tops Practice at Monza as Piastri Chases Championship Lead
5 Sep
Summary
- Lando Norris fastest in Friday practice at Italian GP
- Piastri missed first practice, trails Norris in championship
- Hamilton penalized 5 places on grid for Dutch GP infringement

As the 2025 Formula 1 season heads to the historic Monza circuit for the Italian Grand Prix, Lando Norris has laid down an early marker by topping Friday's practice session. The McLaren driver was 0.083 seconds faster than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, with Carlos Sainz of Williams and Norris' teammate Oscar Piastri rounding out the top four.
Norris will be hoping to use this strong practice performance to make inroads into Piastri's championship lead. The Australian currently holds a 34-point advantage over Norris, but missed the first practice session as McLaren protege Alex Dunne took his car for a spin. Piastri did manage to set his fastest time on his second lap on the soft tires after an issue on his initial run.
Elsewhere, Lewis Hamilton faces a five-place grid penalty for the grand prix after an infringement on the reconnaissance laps before the Dutch event. Both Norris and Piastri had their own moments, with the former having a big slide at the Roggia chicane and the latter running wide and kicking up gravel at the second Lesmo corner. The biggest incident of the session involved Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, who brought out a red flag after spinning at the second Lesmo.
