Nigeria's Football Infrastructure Lags Far Behind World Standards

Football journalist Pooja asserts that Nigeria's footballing landscape, encompassing infrastructure and on-field achievements, remains considerably behind that of leading global nations. He pointed out that no stadium within Nigeria currently satisfies FIFA's stringent requirements to host a World Cup match. Even the prominent Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo was cited as falling significantly short of international standards.

Pooja emphasized that simply constructing more stadiums would not address the core issues. He identified a lack of robust fan culture as a primary reason for the underutilization of many existing facilities. According to him, local matches often lack a substantial audience, rendering such investments less effective. He further critiqued the Super Eagles' performance, citing disappointing results against various nations as evidence of struggles in critical encounters.

The gap between the quality of football showcased at the FIFA World Cup and Nigeria's current level is substantial, according to Pooja. He suggested that Nigeria's football development still has a considerable distance to cover. In his view, only Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman possess the caliber to be starting players for any elite African national team, underscoring the need for continued progress.
