The National Sports Commission (NSC) has cancelled the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) electoral congress that was slated for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State. This move is intended to allow for a comprehensive reorganisation of the federation.
As a consequence, the NSC will establish a 'normalisation committee' to oversee the nation's football operations for an interim period of three months. This decision was reportedly made last Thursday, shortly after the Super Falcons' elimination from the African playoff for the 2027 World Cup by South Africa's Banyana Banyana.
The NFF's Ibrahim Gusau-led executive committee, which was seeking a second term, has been significantly impacted by this cancellation. The Presidency has reportedly given its approval for the announcement of the normalisation committee within 48 hours.
This interim committee will be responsible for preparing the groundwork for new NFF elections and addressing various concerns raised by stakeholders. The Gusau administration has faced criticism for several perceived failures, including the Super Falcons' failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite Nigeria's large player pool and an expanded African allocation for the tournament.
