24 Mar
Summary
- A caddie's mistake denied Jack Nicklaus his first pro win.
- A panicked caddie pulled the cup liner, causing a two-shot penalty.
- Nicklaus later won his first major at the 1962 US Open.

In 1962, Jack Nicklaus's quest for his first professional victory was unexpectedly halted by an unusual error from his caddie, Billy Ford, during the Houston Classic. On the seventh hole, Nicklaus faced a 35-foot putt for birdie. As his caddie, Billy Ford, attempted to tend the flag, he panicked and jerked the flagstick upwards, causing the cup liner to rise above ground.
The ball, heading for the cup, struck the displaced liner, resulting in a two-shot penalty for Nicklaus. This costly misstep ultimately prevented him from contending for the win at Memorial Park. He finished five shots behind the eventual playoff winner, Bobby Nichols. Nicklaus would go on to achieve his first major career win later that year at the US Open.
