NHL Prospect's Life Hangs in Balance After Grueling Workout

NHL prospect Matthew Mayich was hospitalized after collapsing during a strenuous workout with the Arizona State Sun Devils on August 20. The intense session, led by former Green Beret Tim Ziesel, reportedly involved various exercises including squats and push-ups under the sun at Sun Angel Stadium.

During the workout, Mayich, 21, was observed to be disoriented while performing bear crawls and nearly collapsed. He later collapsed during a medicine ball relay race, reportedly attempting to stand twice before losing consciousness.

Other players also experienced adverse effects, with two vomiting. Mayich remained exposed to the sun for several minutes post-collapse before teammates moved him to shade. An ambulance arrived approximately 90 minutes after the workout commenced.

Mayich's attorney confirmed he suffered exertional heat stroke, leading to oxygen deprivation to the brain, and expressed dire concerns, stating Mayich has "zero chance of recovery."
