NHL Discipline Gets Major Overhaul
28 Jan
Summary
- NHL Player Safety now handles most discipline cases.
- New policy covers all league rule violations, not just physical ones.
- William Nylander fined $5,000 for middle finger gesture.

The NHL's Department of Player Safety is implementing a significant shift in its disciplinary procedures. This change means the department will now be responsible for issuing supplemental discipline for a wider array of player infractions, extending beyond just physical fouls to include all league rule violations.
This updated approach was demonstrated with a recent $5,000 fine levied against Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander. The penalty was for raising his middle finger towards a camera while he was sidelined due to injury. Nylander has since apologized for the gesture, attributing it to frustration.
Previously, such violations were handled by NHL executive vice president Colin Campbell. However, under the new structure led by George Parros, Player Safety will manage most discipline. Campbell is expected to retain authority over violations involving coaches or team executives, while Commissioner Gary Bettman will continue to address significant off-ice conduct issues.
