27 Sep
Summary
- Jaguars deploy new drone defense system before Patriots game.
- NFL recorded over 10,000 drone violations near stadiums.
- Drone defense tech is rapidly advancing, needs regulation.
As the NFL season progresses, a new defensive strategy is emerging: combating drone disruptions. The Jacksonville Jaguars are set to activate their new drone defense system, provided by Sentrycs, this Sunday for their game against the New England Patriots. This system will monitor and control the airspace around EverBank Stadium. The NFL has reported a significant increase in unauthorized drone activity, logging 10,852 violations near stadiums between 2021 and 2025. While most incidents caused mere annoyance, some led to game disruptions, including a playoff game in Baltimore in 2025. The evolving technology allows for intercepting drones and safely landing them, a capability many teams are now adopting. The NFL and Major League Baseball have urged the Department of Homeland Security for more resources to address this growing threat.
The FIFA World Cup, held across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, also saw numerous drone interceptions, with the FBI reporting around 700 instances. Drone defense companies are racing to keep pace with rapid technological advancements, emphasizing the need for clearer industry regulations. The process of neutralizing a drone involves detection, identification, tracking, and interdiction, often by disrupting the drone's communication link. While some systems offer physical takedowns, disrupting radio frequencies is a common method. The Safer Skies Act, effective July 1, 2026, aims to provide authorities with more power to address drone incursions at venues.
