NFL Rights Skyrocket: Bundling is Key
14 Mar
Summary
- NFL media rights deals are expected to exceed $10 billion annually.
- Ex-NFL player suggests streaming services must bundle for expensive rights.
- Fans faced costs up to $800 for NFL access in the 2025 season.

The National Football League is nearing a new media rights deal, with projections indicating annual revenues exceeding its current $10 billion. This lucrative landscape is attracting significant interest from various media entities, including streaming platforms. As the league technically can't exit current deals until after the 2029 season, the anticipation for a new agreement before September is high.
Former NFL linebacker Shawne Merriman has suggested that the increasing expense of NFL broadcast rights will compel streaming services to collaborate. He noted the rise of Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television (FAST) channels and anticipates that services like YouTube may bundle with platforms such as TikTok to manage the costs. This bundling strategy is seen as a necessary evolution due to the high price of NFL rights.
The shift of live sports, including the NFL, to streaming services has already resulted in substantial costs for consumers. For the 2025 season, fans could spend nearly $800 to access all games. This includes subscriptions for various platforms like Netflix, ESPN, Peacock, Amazon Prime Video, and NFL+, in addition to the cost of services like NFL Sunday Ticket.
Commissioner Roger Goodell has indicated that negotiations for the new media rights deal will commence after the NFL Players' Association selects a new executive director. Reports suggest that streaming services are expected to secure a larger portion of these media rights, potentially including international and holiday games, signaling a significant future direction for how fans consume NFL content.
