NFL Kickoff Rule Tweaks Ahead: Safety First!
3 Feb
Summary
- NFL plans further adjustments to kickoff rules for enhanced safety.
- Punt plays will also be analyzed for potential injury rate reduction.
- New kickoff rules in 2024 led to more returns and fewer touchbacks.

The National Football League is preparing for additional changes to its kickoff rule, following up on successful adjustments made in 2024. Commissioner Roger Goodell indicated that while the new kickoff format has effectively reduced injuries and increased the number of actual returns, further refinements are possible to lower the injury rate even more. Goodell highlighted that the 2024 changes led to approximately 1135 more returns than the previous year, a positive outcome for fans and player safety.
Beyond kickoffs, the league is also turning its attention to punt plays. Goodell explained that punts, like kickoffs, have a higher injury rate than typical line-of-scrimmage plays. The NFL will utilize data and video review to understand how to improve safety on punts, potentially through rule adjustments or technique modifications. These deliberations are ongoing, with expected changes to be determined this spring.
