Lions' WR Draft Streak: A Rare NFL Feat
15 Apr
Summary
- Only one NFL team drafted WRs in three straight first rounds.
- The Lions did so from 2003-05 with Rogers, R. Williams, M. Williams.
- This rare draft pattern preceded picking Calvin Johnson years later.

In the history of the NFL common draft era, dating back to 1967, only one team has consecutively drafted wide receivers in the first round for three straight years. That team was the Detroit Lions.
From 2003 to 2005, the Lions made this rare selection three times. Their picks were Charles Rogers, Roy Williams, and Mike Williams. Unfortunately, two of these players faced challenges with injuries and inconsistent play, impacting their careers.
Despite the mixed results from these early receiver picks, the Lions' drafting strategy eventually led to a significant success. Two years after their streak, in 2007, the team selected Calvin Johnson, who would become a Hall of Fame wide receiver.
