Newman baseball coach Kenny Koerner has resigned after six seasons, choosing to dedicate more time to his growing family. Koerner expressed a strong desire to spend time with his granddaughters, a significant factor in his decision to step away from coaching.
Under Koerner's leadership, the Newman Comets experienced a remarkable period of success. The team compiled a 138-44-2 record and reached the IHSA Elite Eight five times. They secured state trophies, taking third place in 2023 and fourth in 2024 and 2025.
This sustained high level of performance prompted Newman's reclassification. The Comets moved from Class 1A to 2A in 2024 and 2025, and were subsequently elevated to Class 3A for the 2026 season. Koerner also contributed to significant improvements in the team's baseball facilities during his tenure.
Koerner, who also established the Sterling Sharks travel program, began his coaching career in 2009. He joined Newman as an assistant in 2015 before taking the head coaching position in 2020. He stated his confidence in the program's continued success.
