Newcastle Fanzone Wins Key Court Case Against Pubs
9 Dec
Summary
- Bars lost a legal challenge against a fanzone near St James' Park.
- The fanzone's five-year planning permission extension was upheld.
- A judge ruled against rivals claiming the decision was unlawful.

A legal battle initiated by rival bars and pubs has concluded with a loss for the NE1 Hospitality Group. They sought to overturn Newcastle City Council's decision to grant a five-year planning permission extension for a fanzone located outside St James' Park, known as The Stack venue.
The group argued that the fanzone's extended operation until 2031 was unlawful and was negatively impacting their businesses by diverting customers. This challenge reached the High Court, with opponents seeking to have the council's decision invalidated.
However, a judge has ruled decisively in favour of Newcastle City Council. The court found that there were no valid grounds for judicial review that had a realistic prospect of success, thus upholding the council's decision and allowing the fanzone to continue operating.
