Marta Kostyuk has advanced to the next round of the National Bank Open presented by Rogers, defeating local favorite Katherine Sebov. Kostyuk rallied from a deficit in the first set to secure a 7-6(4), 6-0 victory.
With the elimination of several other Canadians, including Bianca Andreescu, Leylah Fernandez and wild-card Kayla Cross now carry the national hopes. Fernandez, seeded 30th, is set to begin her tournament, while Cross will face a seeded opponent.
Top international players are also progressing. Seventh seed Iga Swiatek, ninth seed Elina Svitolina, and 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova all secured their spots in the third round of the US$7.4-million event.
Additionally, Venus Williams and Alexandra Eala have received a wild card entry into the doubles main draw. Williams, a seasoned champion, will team up with the rapidly rising Eala.
