Natalie Sago Makes NBA Playoff History

NBA referee Natalie Sago has been selected to officiate the upcoming play-in tournament and first round of the playoffs, marking a significant milestone in her career and for women in sports. She is now the third woman in league history, following Violet Palmer and Ashley Moyer-Gleich, to receive this honor.

Sago learned of her selection on Saturday, April 12, 2026, while at the Salt Lake City airport. Initially fearing a reprimand for a past game, she was delighted to receive news of her playoff assignment. Her inclusion underscores the rigorous selection process, which heavily weighs an official's performance grades, play-calling accuracy, and team rankings assessed throughout the regular season.

Monty McCutchen, who oversees referee development, emphasized that trustworthiness and proper training are paramount, regardless of an official's gender. Sago, a veteran of over 400 NBA games, hopes her presence in the playoffs will normalize the role of female referees, stating her desire to be recognized simply as an NBA referee.

This season, Sago and Jason Goldenberg are the only first-time selections to the playoff staff. Sago's father, who has officiated basketball for over 30 years, served as an inspiration.
