Summary
- Denny Hamlin comments on Austin Hill's one-race suspension
- Hill penalized for shunt with Aric Almirola at Indianapolis
- New 2025 NASCAR regulations make Hill ineligible for playoff points

On August 3, 2025, NASCAR announced a one-race suspension and loss of playoff points for driver Austin Hill following his shunt with Aric Almirola at the Indianapolis race last month. Veteran driver Denny Hamlin commented on the penalty, acknowledging that "it always hurts when you're the first" to face such consequences, but insisted the move is intended to deter aggressive driving in the future.
Furthermore, NASCAR's new 2025 regulations stipulate that Hill will be ineligible for any additional playoff points through the regular season, making him the first driver penalized under these rules. Hamlin theorized that Hill's incident may have been an unintentional steering correction, but the sanctioning body has taken a firm stance to curb such behavior.
With Hill sidelined, Austin Dillon filled in for the Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway this past weekend. Meanwhile, Hamlin himself struggled to find his footing at the 0.875-mile oval, qualifying outside the top-10 despite his short track prowess. Hamlin currently leads the playoff standings with four wins but ranks fourth in points, trailing the Hendrick Motorsports trio of Kyle Larson, William Byron, and Chase Elliott.
