The Tata Mumbai Marathon has evolved dramatically since its 2004 inception, growing from just 700 full marathon participants to over 14,000 in that category alone. This year, the event will host over 65,000 runners across all categories, solidifying its status as the country's largest mass-participation sporting event.
Overall participation has seen a staggering 236% increase since its beginning, with women's involvement surging by 222%, indicating a significant shift towards inclusivity. The marathon's global draw is undeniable, attracting over 17,000 participants from outside Mumbai and runners from 46 different nations.
Despite its demanding course, characterized by humidity and challenging climbs like Peddar Road, the marathon continues to attract a dedicated following. The recent inclusion of the Coastal Road adds further difficulty, yet runners return year after year, drawn by the unique social atmosphere and the shared challenge.
