Contreras Ignites Blue Raiders' Win Streak

Middle Tennessee State women's basketball coach Rick Insell recruited senior guard Alayna Contreras specifically for her shooting prowess, and she is now delivering. Contreras recently achieved a season-high 25 points in the Blue Raiders' dominant 81-58 win against rival Western Kentucky. She has been averaging 19 points over the past four games, demonstrating her significant impact on the court.

The team, which lost all five starters from the previous season, features a roster of mostly freshmen. Contreras, a veteran with over 1,000 career points, provides crucial leadership. She noted that the team's unselfishness and ability to hit shots have been key to their recent success, suggesting they are hitting their stride at an opportune time.

Contreras's performance is also elevating her teammates. Freshman forward Blair Baugus recorded her ninth double-double, while Macie Phifer tied her season high with 20 points, and Kirston Verhulst added 15. Coach Insell highlighted the potential of his young players, emphasizing that upcoming pivotal games will be a true test of their growth and resilience.
