27 Sep, 2025
Summary
- Benfica's new coach Jose Mourinho firmly rejects Benzema transfer speculation
- Mourinho states Benzema is content and financially secure in Saudi Arabia
- Mourinho and Benzema have shared history at Real Madrid, but no reunion planned
On September 27, 2025, Benfica's new head coach Jose Mourinho firmly dismissed speculation linking veteran striker Karim Benzema to a potential move to Portugal. Speaking in Lisbon, Mourinho stated that the 37-year-old Benzema is content and financially secure in his current role with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad, making a return to European football highly unlikely.
Mourinho and Benzema previously worked together during their time at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013. However, the Benfica coach confirmed that despite their shared history, there is "no possibility" of a reunion between the two. Mourinho insisted that Benzema's lifestyle and financial situation in Saudi Arabia make a move back to Europe an unrealistic prospect at this stage of his career.
Benzema has been a major influence for Al-Ittihad since joining the club in 2023, scoring 41 goals in 64 games. Though he recently missed a few weeks due to a muscle injury, Al-Ittihad's coach Laurent Blanc has confirmed that Benzema has returned to training and should be ready to face Al-Nassr in the upcoming Saudi Pro League match.
