Adelaide to Host Historic MotoGP Street Race

Adelaide will host the first-ever MotoGP street race in 2027, relocating the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix from its long-time home at Phillip Island. This significant shift follows months of stalled contract negotiations for Phillip Island and the Victorian government's rejection of proposals to move the race to Melbourne's Albert Park. The Adelaide Parklands Circuit, which previously hosted Formula 1 and now hosts Supercars, will be adapted for this historic event.

This move aligns with MotoGP's strategy, under new ownership by Liberty Media, to expand its global audience by bringing racing to major population centers. While conventional wisdom has long considered street circuits too dangerous for motorcycle racing, the sport is now exploring this avenue. The South Australian government emphasized the economic benefits and global profile boost this event will bring to Adelaide and the state.

The decision represents a substantial blow to Victorian motorsport, as Phillip Island will host its final world championship motorcycle grand prix in October 2026. The iconic circuit, known for its flowing layout and high speeds, has been a rider favorite, but facility upgrades and its remote location presented challenges. Despite recent safety improvements, outdated pit lane and garage infrastructure, coupled with limited nearby accommodation, contributed to discussions about the event's future.

Discussions about moving the race to Albert Park in Melbourne were ultimately unsuccessful due to the circuit's mixed-use nature and the extensive infrastructure already being modernized for Formula 1. Phillip Island locals had petitioned for the government to fund necessary upgrades to retain the race, highlighting its significant economic impact on the region. However, Adelaide's proactive bid ultimately secured the historic street race.
