Monza Promoted Despite Loss: Serie B Playoff Shock!
31 May
Summary
- AC Monza secured Serie A promotion after losing playoff second leg.
- Promotion decided by higher league stage finish, not playoff score.
- This mirrors their promotion exactly four years prior in 2022.
AC Monza has earned promotion back to Italy's top-flight Serie A, marking a swift return after only one season in Serie B. The promotion was secured despite a 2-0 defeat in the second leg of their playoff encounter with Catanzaro on Friday.
With the aggregate score tied at 2-2, Monza's place in Serie A was confirmed by their higher finish in the Serie B league stage, placing them above Catanzaro. This remarkable achievement occurs exactly four years after their initial promotion to Serie A in 2022.
Under the former ownership of Silvio Berlusconi, Monza had risen from Italy's third tier to Serie A. Following their relegation to Serie B in 2025, the club was subsequently sold to the U.S.-based investment firm Beckett Layne Ventures.
