MLS Turnaround: Union Rises from Ashes

San Diego and Philadelphia Union are set to clash at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday in MLS action, both aiming to halt recent losing streaks. San Diego, the current Supporters' Shield holders, finds itself in a disappointing 10th position in the Western Conference standings. With only eight wins from 24 matches, they trail the Vancouver Whitecaps by 16 points and are two points adrift of a playoff spot.

Conversely, the Philadelphia Union has staged a remarkable recovery. After a disastrous start to the 2026 MLS season, which included six defeats in their first six games and an eventual dismissal of coach Bradley Carnell, the team is now nine outings unbeaten and has secured seven victories during this impressive run. This turnaround is largely attributed to significant defensive improvements, with the Union now conceding only one goal per game, a stark contrast to the two goals per game average from their initial 15 matches. American forward Milan Iloski has also been a key offensive contributor, scoring 12 goals in 24 appearances.

Since MLS resumed after the World Cup break on July 22, 2026, the Philadelphia Union has collected the most points in the league, earning 23 out of a possible 27. They remain the only unbeaten team during this period, while San Diego has lost three of their last five MLS games. Philadelphia has also achieved two consecutive clean sheets and aims for a third, a feat not accomplished since September-October 2025.
