MLB Umps Get Private Ball-Strike Help
14 Feb
Summary
- Umpires can now get private feedback on ball-strike calls.
- This new system aims to improve umpire accuracy.
- Feedback is given during half-inning breaks, not in real-time.

Major League Baseball is implementing a significant change for its umpires with the introduction of an automated ball-strike (ABS) challenge system this season. Beyond the team challenge function, this system will now allow individual umpires to privately consult with an ABS operator about specific ball-strike calls. This feedback mechanism is designed to help umpires refine their accuracy during regular-season and postseason games.
The ABS operator, equipped with high-tech tracking systems, will provide pitch-specific information. Crucially, this consultation will occur during breaks between innings, preventing real-time interference with game flow. Umpires can flag a pitch they wish to review, which will then be addressed during the subsequent half-inning break, ensuring a structured and non-disruptive feedback process.
This initiative mirrors the in-game video access already available to players and coaches, extending a similar opportunity for immediate review to the officiating crew. League officials believe this tool will support the umpires, who are already highly skilled, in getting every call correct. The system is set to be fully operational in regular-season and playoff games starting in 2026, following trials in spring training.
