Bob Lemon has returned to coach the Mitchell High School girls soccer team, stepping back into the role he held for six years until 2022. He inherits a squad with significant experience, including 11 returning letterwinners from the previous 5-10 season. This core group of players is expected to provide leadership and elevate the team's competitive edge from the outset.
Last season, the Kernels finished as the No. 14 seed in Class AA, with many games decided by narrow margins. Half of their 10 losses were by just one goal, indicating potential for improvement. The team's collective strength lies in its unity, a quality Coach Lemon emphasizes for success.
Lemon, who stayed connected to the program by watching games remotely and assisting with track and field, felt the timing was right to return. The Kernels kicked off their season on August 14, 2026, with a decisive 9-0 victory. Upcoming home games include matchups against Spearfish, Douglas/New Underwood, Yankton, Dakota Valley, Aberdeen Central, Brandon Valley, and West Central, with the Class AA playoffs scheduled to begin on October 6, 2026.
