The Mitchell High School girls golf team secured a third-place finish at the Class AA state tournament, held at Cattail Crossing Golf Course. This result maintained their standing from the first day of competition.
The Kernels completed the 36-hole tournament with a total score of 634 strokes, following rounds of 308 and 326. Aberdeen Central won the championship with 603 strokes, while O'Gorman placed second at 626.
Mitchell's success was highlighted by five golfers finishing within the top-25. Maddie Childs led the team in ninth place with 156 strokes, closely followed by Londyn Hajek in a tie for 10th with 158. Mia Larson and Brynlee Sabers tied for 13th at 163, and Anna Eliason finished 17th with 164 strokes.
Head coach Brian Eliason praised the team's performance, noting that having five golfers in the top 17 was "phenomenal." He acknowledged that Aberdeen played exceptionally well and that warmer, windier conditions likely contributed to higher scores across the board for many teams.
This third-place finish concluded Mitchell's streak of five consecutive seasons with a top-two placement in the Class AA state team standings. The tournament also marked the final high school event for seniors Maddie Childs and Brynlee Sabers.
