Barnett's Shock Warriors Exit: Family First
24 Feb
Summary
- Mitch Barnett granted early release from final year of NRL contract.
- Departure driven by child's medical needs and family support.
- Barnett to return to Australia after the 2026 season.

Warriors co-captain Mitch Barnett will depart the Auckland-based club after the 2026 season, having been granted an early release from his contract. This unexpected decision is driven by personal and family reasons, specifically related to the medical needs of his child and the family's requirement for proximity to their support network in New South Wales.
Barnett stated that his family's needs supersede his football career, emphasizing his role as a father and husband. He acknowledged the understanding and support from the Warriors, including coach Andrew Webster, throughout the process. Barnett joined the Warriors in 2023 from the Newcastle Knights and has played around 50 games for the club.
Despite suffering an ACL injury in 2025, Barnett is expected to return for the early rounds of the 2026 season. His departure will create a significant gap in the Warriors' forward pack and leadership. While no new club has been officially confirmed, the Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans, and Newcastle Knights have been linked with him for 2027.
