The 2025 college football preseason coaches poll was released on August 4, 2025, and the Michigan Wolverines have been ranked No. 14 heading into the upcoming season. This comes after the team finished the 2024 campaign unranked, going 8-5 in their first year under head coach Sherrone Moore.
The top of the rankings is dominated by traditional powerhouses, with Texas taking the No. 1 spot, followed by No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Penn State, No. 4 Georgia, and No. 5 Notre Dame. The Wolverines are the fifth-highest ranked Big Ten team, trailing Ohio State, Penn State, No. 7 Oregon, and No. 12 Illinois.
Despite the disappointing 8-5 record last season, coach Moore remains optimistic about the team's prospects in 2025. "Last year, we hit a couple of speed bumps, but we didn't allow those to become roadblocks," he said at Big Ten Media Days. "We're just gonna be a better team this year." The Wolverines will look to build on their success in rivalry and trophy games, having won against Ohio State, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Michigan State in 2024.
