Interim Coach Fights to Keep Michigan's Title Hopes Alive

Interim Michigan basketball coach Mike Boynton is making a concerted effort to retain the team's highly-rated roster following Dusty May's unexpected move to the Dallas Mavericks. Boynton, one of May's assistants for the past two seasons, has been meeting with staff, players, and their families to secure commitments, aiming to keep the defending national champions' top-10 roster together.

Boynton, who served as head coach at Oklahoma State from 2017 to 2024, is also pitching Michigan's administration for a long-term coaching position. He highlights his previous experience and familiarity with the current system as reasons for sustained success, arguing that removing the interim tag offers the most stability for the program and recruits.

Athletic Director Warde Manuel has not set a timeline for a permanent coaching decision, having recently navigated a similar transition with the football program. While Boynton focuses on roster preservation, the timing of May's departure presents challenges for recruiting, as potential players may hesitate without a confirmed long-term coach.

Boynton believes continuity is key, planning to maintain a system similar to May's and emphasizing delegation. He aims to continue coaching defense while hiring an elite offensive coach, leveraging the existing offensive structure and player commitments like those from Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney to build a strong team for the upcoming season.
