Summary
- Australian cyclist Michael Matthews broke both wrists in a training crash.
- This injury rules him out of all upcoming races, including Paris-Nice.
- He previously recovered from a pulmonary embolism in 2025.

Australian cyclist Michael Matthews has been sidelined indefinitely after a training crash on Thursday resulted in fractures to both his wrists. The 35-year-old was preparing for the Paris-Nice race, which was scheduled to begin this Sunday. This injury marks a significant blow to his European spring campaign.
Matthews, who has achieved 44 career victories, including stages in all three Grand Tours, had previously faced a serious health scare in 2025. He recovered from a pulmonary embolism that was discovered during an altitude training camp in Italy.
His team, Jayco Alula, confirmed the extent of his injuries via CT scans and stated that Matthews is in direct contact with medical staff. They have assured him of extensive support to facilitate his recovery. Last year, Matthews finished fourth in the Milan-Sanremo race and was set to compete again on March 21st.
