Mexico's World Cup Hopes Shattered: Two Key Players Out
14 Mar
Summary
- Midfielder Marcel Ruiz tore his ACL and meniscus, ruled out of the World Cup.
- Goalkeeper Luis Malagón also diagnosed with a ruptured Achilles tendon.
- Mexico's World Cup opener is scheduled for June 11 against South Africa.

Mexico's national team faces significant challenges ahead of the World Cup, with two integral players recently declared unavailable due to severe injuries. Midfielder Marcel Ruiz is the latest casualty, suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his right knee during a CONCACAF Champions Cup match.
His club, Toluca, confirmed the injury on Friday, announcing that Ruiz will require surgery. The 25-year-old midfielder had become a consistent presence for the national team since August 2024 under manager Javier Aguirre, earning 17 caps and was poised for his World Cup debut.
Ruiz's injury comes just days after Club América goalkeeper Luis Malagón was diagnosed with a ruptured Achilles tendon in his left leg. These setbacks add to a growing list of sidelined players for Mexico, including Rodrigo Huescas, who has been out since November with a knee ligament tear.
Mexico is scheduled to kick off their World Cup campaign on June 11, facing South Africa in their opening match. The loss of Ruiz, a key figure in Toluca's recent championship success, and Malagón presents a considerable hurdle for the team's prospects.
