4 Jul
Summary
- Four fans died from asphyxiation and cardiac arrest during celebrations.
- Mexico City will double security and limit capacity at key sites.
- Alcohol sales prohibited in the city center to enhance safety.

Mexico City is bolstering security and implementing capacity limits at popular viewing spots, including the Monument to Independence and the Zócalo fan festival, for an upcoming Mexico-England World Cup match. These measures follow the recent deaths of four fans who succumbed to asphyxiation and cardiac arrest during celebrations after Mexico's win over Ecuador.
Authorities have announced that access to the Monument of Independence, commonly known as 'the Angel,' will be capped at 25,000 people. Similar restrictions will apply to the Zócalo, the city's main square. This reinforcement includes deploying 6,000 officers along Paseo de la Reforma, double the previous deployment, alongside significant police presence at Azteca Stadium and the Zócalo.
Further safety protocols include establishing a security perimeter around the Angel of Independence, restricting street vendors and delivery drivers, and implementing strategic closures of metro and Metrobus lines. The sale of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited in the city center from early morning on July 5 until the following day, with consumption restricted to licensed establishments.
