Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff expressed astonishment after their major upgrade package, introduced for the Bahrain Grand Prix, appeared to hinder performance rather than improve it. The team, which had been dominant earlier in the 2026 season, arrived at the Malaysian Grand Prix expecting a strong showing but instead faced an underwhelming qualifying session.
Drivers Kimi Antonelli and George Russell qualified fourth and eighth, respectively, with Max Verstappen securing a commanding pole position for Red Bull. Wolff stated that the team was caught off guard by the car's behavior, noting excessive drag and understeer in low-speed corners, characteristics they had not encountered previously this year. This is particularly concerning as the team believes the upgrade itself is functional, but its performance in the unique conditions of Malaysia remains a mystery.
George Russell, who had recently won in Azerbaijan, found himself unable to replicate that form. He noted the demanding nature of the Sepang International Circuit, with its hot temperatures and rough tarmac, which seemed to affect Mercedes more than their competitors. Antonelli, despite a qualifying error due to track limits, believed a better grid position might have been possible but acknowledged Verstappen's superior pace and Ferrari's significant improvement.
