Mendieta's Chelsea Plea: Reunite Alonso & Frimpong?

Pundit Gaizka Mendieta has advised Chelsea to consider signing Jeremie Frimpong, suggesting a reunion with manager Xabi Alonso. The pair previously achieved significant success together at Bayer Leverkusen, where they lost only one match during the 2023-24 season, securing the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal titles. Mendieta believes Frimpong, who moved to Liverpool for £30 million last summer, could benefit from reuniting with Alonso if he is not performing well at his current club.

Frimpong's tenure at Liverpool was hampered by injuries and a different tactical setup, leading to a drop in his performance compared to his time in Germany. The Netherlands international contributed only three goals this season, a stark contrast to his 14 goal contributions in his final season under Alonso. Despite Mendieta's suggestion, a move for Frimpong to Chelsea appears unlikely, given their existing options at right-back and the player's likely desire to succeed at Anfield under new manager Andoni Iraola.
