McLaren has officially signed 11-year-old Harry Williams, marking him as the youngest driver ever to join their prestigious development program. This groundbreaking recruitment places Williams two years ahead of the age at which seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton was signed by the team in 1998.
Williams, hailing from Cheshire, has already established an impressive karting career since starting in 2021. His notable achievements include winning the 2025 British Open Championship and the O plate in the Italian Waterswift Series, alongside a fifth-place finish in the European Waterswift Championship.
Alessandro Aluni Bravi, McLaren's chief business affairs officer, highlighted the strategic importance of Williams's addition. He stated that the goal is to cultivate a sustainable talent pipeline for McLaren's F1, IndyCar, and World Endurance Championship racing endeavors. Bravi emphasized that for Williams, the immediate focus is on enjoying karting and gaining experience without undue pressure.
"Our goal is to build a consistent pipeline, laddering into our race programmes in F1, IndyCar and the World Endurance Championship for many years to come," Bravi commented. He added, "For this driver, I think there is no target, no pressure other than enjoy karting to get maximum experience, but also to understand what does it mean to be a McLaren driver."
Williams himself shared his enthusiasm, stating, "I am really excited to join the McLaren driver development programme. They're known for developing talent, so it's great to join the team as I continue to progress in karting and into single-seater racing in the future." The team's commitment to nurturing young talent is evident, with other notable figures like Lando Norris also progressing through their development ranks.
