Married Jockeys Make History at Melbourne Cup

The race was a family affair, as Melham's husband, Ben, was also competing, riding Smokin Romans. As the field bunched down the Flemington straight, Melham expertly navigated her way through tight gaps, at one point even riding past her husband to take the lead. With a firm bump, she moved Smokin Romans out of the way, showcasing her daring and skill.

Melham's masterful ride did not end there. She then threaded the needle between Land Legend and Royal Supremacy, holding off Goodie Too Shoes and Middle Earth to secure the victory. The 29-year-old jockey's triumph marked the first time a married couple had both ridden in the Melbourne Cup, cementing their place in the annals of racing history.

Melham's victory came just a month after she made history by becoming the first female jockey to win the Caulfield Cup, making her the first to achieve the prestigious Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double. As she celebrated her triumph, Melham paid tribute to her husband, acknowledging that they would be sharing the $225,000 in prize money as a team.
