Marlins Reinstate Morel, Option Hernandez Before Dodgers Series
28 Apr
Summary
- Christopher Morel reinstated from IL, optioned outfielder to Triple-A
- Morel, signed in offseason, began season on IL with oblique strain
- Esteury Ruiz kept on roster over Hernández due to speed

The Miami Marlins have made roster adjustments, reinstating first baseman Christopher Morel from the 10-day injured list. Concurrently, outfielder Heriberto Hernández has been optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville. Morel, a free-agent signee over the offseason, began the 2026 campaign sidelined with a left oblique strain sustained during Opening Day practice.
In Morel's absence, Connor Norby, also relatively new to the position, started 20 of the Marlins' 28 games at first base. The Marlins are hoping Morel can regain his previous form, which saw him hit 63 homers and drive in 177 runs between 2022 and 2024. Morel recently completed a four-game rehab assignment.
Meanwhile, Esteury Ruiz, acquired via trade and recently returned from the IL himself, has been retained on the active roster. This decision came at the expense of Hernández, who struggled with a .474 OPS in 22 games this season after a promising rookie year in 2025.
