WBC Exodus Empties Seattle Camp, Creates New Stars

Peoria Sports Complex is experiencing a shift as 18 Seattle Mariners players are absent for the World Baseball Classic (WBC), the highest number from any MLB organization. This significant departure, representing a quarter of the team's 40-man roster, has altered the typical spring training environment.

President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto noted the unusual number of players away, joking about the federations' awareness of other teams. While the absence of stars like Julio Rodriguez and Cal Raleigh is felt, veteran catcher Mitch Garver believes the clubhouse chemistry will allow them to find their groove quickly upon their return.

Manager Dan Wilson and Dipoto acknowledge the inherent risks of players competing internationally, recalling a past injury to Drew Smyly during the WBC in 2017. Despite these concerns, the perceived benefits of player participation in the tournament are seen to outweigh the risks.

The team is monitoring player performances on television to assess their condition, focusing on execution and command rather than just results. This period also presents a valuable opportunity for players not usually in the spotlight, such as catchers Andrew Knizner and Jakson Reetz, to gain more playing time and experience.

To manage the mass exodus, Dipoto expanded the spring roster to 77 players, a move that has challenged clubhouse staff with limited locker space. This larger roster influx provides opportunities for minor league free agents to receive significant repetitions during the seven-week period.

Ultimately, the departure of key players, while impacting team camaraderie, also fosters new bonds and allows others to step up. As players are eliminated from the WBC, they will gradually return, bringing stories and experience back to a camp that will soon prepare for the regular season.
