Maphaka's Red-Ball Test Looms

The upcoming season presents a critical juncture for Kwena Maphaka to establish his presence in red-ball cricket. DP World Lions bowling coach Allan Donald stressed that it is time for the left-arm seamer to "find his identity" in the longer format, as his potential faces increased scrutiny domestically and internationally. Maphaka has limited first-class experience, having played only two matches for the Lions before a hamstring tear in October 2025 sidelined him for over two months.

Ironically, an injury to Proteas spearhead Kagiso Rabada has propelled Maphaka into the Test team mix ahead of South Africa's busy summer. Donald revealed Rabada's potential absence from the Test series against Australia. Donald expressed his keenness for Maphaka to gain match time with the Lions, emphasizing the need for him to "feel what it is to bowl long" and build his body up for the demands of Test cricket, a significant step up from the T20 format he has largely played.

Maphaka, currently with the Proteas T20 squad in Windhoek, stated that he has focused on improving his bowling consistency during the winter months. He acknowledged the need for work in longer formats, which he believes will also benefit his T20 game. The young bowler expressed confidence in his abilities, stating he is ready to "do the job if I'm asked to do so." Donald drew a parallel with Dewald Brevis, whose year and a half in domestic cricket reportedly transformed his game after initially leap-frogging into franchise leagues.
