Ugarte Undergoes Knee Surgery After World Cup Setback

Manchester United confirmed that Manuel Ugarte has undergone surgery for a knee ligament injury sustained while playing for Uruguay. The midfielder was taken off on a stretcher during a World Cup group stage match on June 26 after an awkward landing. Ugarte stated the timing of the injury would "stay with me for the rest of my life."
Ugarte will now commence rehabilitation, with the club's medical and performance staff set to manage his recovery carefully. He featured in all three of Uruguay's group stage matches. Since joining United in 2025, he has made 69 appearances and scored two goals.
Last season, Ugarte's playing time was limited, appearing in only 24 matches with 10 starts. His absence, coupled with Casemiro's departure upon contract expiry, prompted United to reinforce their midfield. The club has since signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48m plus bonuses and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for approximately £35m.
