Sharks' Celebrini Set for Massive Deal

Leo Carlsson's record-setting $90 million offer sheet with the Philadelphia Flyers, carrying an $18 million AAV, has sparked discussion regarding Macklin Celebrini's future contract. However, an NHL player agent suggests this development doesn't fundamentally alter Celebrini's situation, as he is not a restricted free agent eligible for offer sheets this summer.

Celebrini, a highly-touted prospect, is approaching the final year of his entry-level contract and is eligible for an extension starting July 1. While the Flyers' offer to Carlsson may influence contract expectations, Celebrini is expected to sign a substantial extension with the San Jose Sharks, with no indication he wishes to leave.

While some projections placed Celebrini's AAV between $15-16 million, Carlsson's deal could potentially raise that figure if his camp uses it as a benchmark. Sharks GM Mike Grier views Celebrini as a step above players like Carlsson and Connor Bedard.

The NHL salary cap is projected to increase significantly in the coming seasons, reaching around $113.5 million by the 2027-28 season. This financial flexibility, combined with the Sharks' ownership's wealth, suggests they are well-positioned to meet Celebrini's contract demands.

The Sharks are expected to prioritize securing Celebrini long-term to avoid him becoming a highly sought-after free agent. Celebrini himself has expressed a desire to commit to the team and is reportedly a team-first player, similar to his idol Sidney Crosby, suggesting he might not push for the absolute maximum AAV.
