£100m Boost for Templemore Sports Complex
30 Jan
Summary
- Olympic-size swimming pool to be built.
- Major redevelopment of 1970s leisure centre planned.
- Project set to open in 2030/31.

A transformative £100m investment is planned for Londonderry's Templemore Sports Complex, which includes the creation of an Olympic-size, eight-lane swimming pool. This redevelopment of the leisure centre, originally built in the 1970s, also features a separate leisure pool, a toddler pool, and water recreation features. The project aims to bring an international-standard facility to the city, which currently lacks an Olympic-sized pool.
Further enhancements will include an eight-court sports hall, a fitness suite, wellness spa, spin studio, and squash courts. Outdoor amenities will comprise a full-sized floodlit 3G GAA pitch, a dedicated 3G football pitch, three grass football pitches, a refurbished running track, and walking trails. Consultants are actively working on the design, with a focus on reducing the project's carbon footprint.
The Derry City and Strabane District Council will fund the £100m capital costs through long-term rates investment. A public consultation for outdoor facilities is scheduled for early 2026, with a planning application expected later this year. Subject to approvals, the complex is targeted to open in 2030/31, marking a major milestone for a world-class leisure facility.
