Liverpool Secures Summer Signing Amidst Defensive Crisis
2 Feb
Summary
- Liverpool agrees to an $82 million deal for defender Jeremy Jacquet.
- The transfer will be effective in the summer, not immediately.
- Jacquet chose Liverpool over Chelsea, who offered the same deal.

Liverpool has reached an agreement valued at $82 million for Jeremy Jacquet, a promising 20-year-old defender from Rennes. The transfer, however, is slated for the summer, providing no immediate relief for Liverpool's current defensive shortages. This past Sunday, the Reds finalized the deal with the Ligue 1 club.
Reports indicate Chelsea matched Liverpool's offer, but Jacquet ultimately opted for Anfield. The decision reportedly followed news of Mamadou Sarr returning to Chelsea and Josh Acheampong staying put. Liverpool, currently competing on multiple fronts, faces a severe lack of senior center-backs, with only Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate fit.
Jacquet, who has represented France at various youth levels, joined Rennes' academy at 14. He made his Ligue 1 debut in the 2023-24 season and has since become a mainstay for Rennes, contributing significantly with an average of 4.8 clearances and 0.8 blocks per 90 minutes. Rennes has insisted on keeping him for the remainder of the current season due to their own European aspirations.
