The Little Tigers T-Ball program in Mitchell experienced a highly successful inaugural year, with more than 100 boys and girls aged 5-7 participating. This initiative was a collaborative effort between Dakota Wesleyan University's baseball program and the city of Mitchell.
The program ran twice weekly throughout July at the Cadwell Sports Complex. It aimed to introduce the basics of baseball and softball fundamentals while prioritizing fun. DWU baseball coach Charlie Dubanoski highlighted the engaging station-based practices, which included activities like playing catch, infield drills, and hitting off a tee. Volunteer efforts from DWU baseball players also bolstered the program.
To conclude the season on July 29, participants enjoyed freezer pops and a special water balloon activity in place of standard batting tees. This T-ball program is part of a broader effort to expand youth baseball in Mitchell, working alongside the Palace City Baseball Association. The city aims to create more playing opportunities for youth aged 8-12 in the future.
